Chapter 3
Whisper in the Night.

To all my wonderful reviewers thank you soooo much! In addition, thank you for the cookies I was thrown, cookies are the real brain food. Well I bet everyone is wondering what happened, why I didn’t update… (Sighs) Where to start I got hammered with finals, my computer died and I about joined it, lets just say I had to rewrite a three page paper in 2 hours from scratch… (Growls at stupid long dead laptop) Now I have a new computer and can final get back to the writing I love soo much. So Thank you all again for being soo patient for me.  Super hugs to my beta Sara! (Throws some cookies her way)

P.S. I’ve also started posting my work, writing and my art work on Deviant art so feel free to go and look. Same name as here.

** Ok standard Note: I don't own any part or any characters from InuYasha and Yu Yu Hakusho. I just borrow the characters to play with for a while, and then give them back, only slightly mentally damaged… (Swings broom at Youko to force him back in my closet) Not you! You have to stay and 'play' a little longer… hahahah ok on with the story…

Kurama talking to Youko. '…'
Youko talking to Kurama. '….'

After hearing Youko’s story, Kurama felt drained as if he had lived the story himself.  So he gave into the desire to rest, and went to another room to sleep for the night. Youko protested this decision heavily; he didn’t want to leave as he said, ‘their woman’, claiming that Reikai might come and take her. To this Kurama did roll his eyes, scolding the kitsune from his childishness.

He continued into another room, finally thinking of a way to appeasing the spirit, ‘Youko, don’t you think it would be an even worse shock if ‘our woman’ woke not only in a strange place, but with a strange man in the room?’

Inside, Youko huffed but went silent for his other half.  Kurama did compromise a little; he didn’t go far but into the next room.  Having no clothes with him, he simply took off his button up shirt and settled in to sleep in his undershirt and pants.  He made a mental note to go get some clothes tomorrow, which was much to Youko objections.

‘Oh, no! What if she wakes up and we’re not here…or if Reikai sends someone to collect her and we’re not here to protect her.’

To these objections, Kurama just wisely pointed out that if this was to be ‘their woman’, did they not want to look their best when she first meets them properly?  However, even as he drifted into sleep Kurama could see the fox pouting in the back on his mind; it seemed Youko felt he was making all the concessions recently.  Moreover, Kurama had to wonder just how long it would be until Youko took control of their body and moved them back to her room.

*******

The first thing Kagome was aware of was the feeling like being slowly raised out of water.  She could feel the pain of her hurt body, but she could also feel it healing, and not for the first time Kagome thanked her rapid healing abilities. She may not be a great Miko like Kikyo, but she did have some power. The next thing her mind processed was the fact she had been attacked by a demon, which brought up a very good question: How and why was she still alive? Had someone saved her? Who could have…or would have? Well she had known many demons; demons that were not pushovers.  If one demon was still alive, then her friends just had to be. So now, who was it? Kouga, Sesshoumaru, Inuyasha, maybe even Shippo.

As she remembered her friends, her mind became a white plane, and there surrounded by mist she saw a figure, Youko. He stood just a little ways in front of her, back turned towards her but his head turned slightly. She had seen the pose a hundred times if not more; he was looking over his shoulder at her, as if he was waiting for her. Why was she seeing him, of all people… er, demons…why him? She had to admit if only to herself she truly would love to see him again. If for nothing else, the chance to finally explain things fully and truthfully; to tell him who she really was, and where she really came from. While on another level, she also admitted she had felt something for the fox.  She’d just never had the chance to know him better, and so had never had the chance to find out what these feeling really were. As she watched him, she felt compelled to reach out to touch him to know he was there, and that maybe she was being given another chance to know those answers.

She raised her arm, and pain raced up and down its length like it was the Indy 500, but still she had to reach out.  Her limb moved like it was made of concrete, and her fingers gave only the slightest twitch of movement.  It seemed the only signal going any where in her arm was that of pain. After a great show of will, her arm was up in front of her, her fingers out stretched. However, that was when Youko turned his head and started walking away, his clothes flowing behind him and tail swishing gently from side to side…his steps just as calm and confident, as they had been when she had known him in the past. In addition, try as she might she just could not make her voice work to call out to him. Then the white world of her mind collapsed into blackness and the pain intensified tenfold; so horrible the pain she could not stop herself from screaming as tears leaked down her face.

Then she was submerged again.  Back underwater, where the voices she heard were distant incoherent echoes, and pain ripped through her like waves crashing onto the shore.

***

The door to the room that Kagome lay in slammed open, the whole house woken by the screams of the girl.  Yukina ran to her side, grabbing her shoulders and trying to calm her. It seemed to work as the screams died away and she went still, back into unconsciousness. Yukina sighed in relief and slowly turned towards the door where Kurama, Hiei, and Genkai stood.

“Must have been bad dreams of her attack,” Yukina said as she stood and moved to return to her room.

Genkai sighed and walked back down the hall only pausing long enough to say her rough aged voice, “We’ll talk about this in the morning.”

Kurama sighed too as he watched them go.  Once he began to step forward to walk into the unconscious girl’s room, Hiei’s voice stopped him.

“What the hell is going on Fox?” His eyes were hard as he looked at his long time friend and partner.

Before Kurama could stop him, Youko took control and answered for them, “Nothing that concerns you…”

Hiei’s hand moved too quick for a normal humans eyes as he grabbed and spun the kitsune, Hiei’s glaring eyes looked square into the gold green mix eyes of Kurama as if daring the fox to repeat his last phrase.

“Listen fox… this is the second time I’ve seen you take control in the last few hours.  What is this woman to you that you are controlling Kurama for?  Why haven’t you acted as normal, and why aren’t you making the tonic to erase her memory?”

In answer, Youko’s voice was deadly calm as if he was speaking to an enemy, “This girl is under my protection now, and I will say when it is time to erase her memory!  No one will get in my way; something about her calls to me, and until I know what, she is mine.”

Youko shrugged off Hiei’s hands and watched to see what he would say.  Just as Hiei started to open his mouth to speak again, a small whisper pierced the room; rendering both youkai speechless with eyes wide.

Youko slowly turned away from Hiei towards the girl. Kurama, now inside, had been yelling about being let out was now as silent as the grave.  From inside, his green eyes were wide and mouth agape. Hiei’s own eyes widened a little as he tilted his head to look around Youko at the still sleeping girl, wondering if he heard wrong or that the impossible was possible.

Youko’s breath whistled out of his lungs sharply, his eyes unblinking.  Even though is youkai heart was different from a human’s, it sped up to almost hammering in his chest. Youko changed quickly before either could blink, taking his demon form with his heightened senses.  He didn’t want to take the chance to miss this.  If what he thought he heard was right, he wanted to be sure. His ears twitched to pick up the slightest sounds.

Outside, crickets chirped happily, unaware of the building tension in the room of the ancient temple. A soft wind blew through the trees, just barely rustling the leaves. An owl’s call and the sound of its feathered wings filled the cool night air as it glided out of a tree and into the night sky away from the temple, whose calm was about to be broken with a single word.

Kagome laid still, her breath coming in rasping breaths.  She didn’t move; even with the weight of two demon’s eyes watching and waiting on baited breath. In her own mind she was lost to dream, and the voices she could hear in the room only added to it’s realism as she saw her self with friends, laughing around a campfire. In the dream just as now, a set of golden molten eyes never left her form. She smiled in her dream, an event that would have shown on her body were she not so injured.  Nevertheless, the one event that did come through from her dream is the one that sent both demons reeling in shock. In a low raspy sore and pained voice, one word did escape her lips.

“Youko…”
